Fidelis Mitigation Consulting, LCSW is a forensic social work and criminal defense advocacy firm serving individuals involved in the criminal legal system throughout Long Island, New York City, and New York State.

 

Our mission is to investigate and contextualize the developmental, psychological, familial, social, environmental, and systemic factors that may have contributed to an individual’s legal involvement. Through comprehensive psychosocial investigation, clinical assessment, treatment planning, and mitigation advocacy, we assist defense attorneys in presenting a more complete understanding of their clients while identifying meaningful opportunities for treatment, rehabilitation, and community-based intervention.

 

Position Overview

Fidelis is seeking experienced New York State Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) to join our team as independent Mitigation Specialists.

 

This is a primarily remote position with a flexible schedule and caseload. Most client interviews, collateral interviews, attorney consultations, record reviews, case conferences, and report preparation can be completed remotely.

We are particularly interested in clinicians located in Suffolk and Nassau Counties who possess strong clinical assessment, analytical, investigative, and professional writing skills and who are available to conduct occasional in-person jail interviews when necessary.

 

Mitigation Specialists conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial investigations on behalf of individuals represented by criminal defense counsel. The work requires the ability to synthesize complex clinical, developmental, social, and historical information into clear, clinically informed, and compelling written mitigation reports.

This opportunity is particularly well suited for experienced clinicians seeking part-time forensic work, supplemental income, professional flexibility, and the ability to work primarily from home.

 

Collaborative Case Model

 

Mitigation Specialists do not work in isolation.Every case is handled collaboratively with Jerra L. Juliano, LCSW, Lead Mitigation Specialist.

 

The assigned Mitigation Specialist conducts the primary investigation while working closely with the Lead Mitigation Specialist throughout the case. Clinical findings, mitigating factors, investigative strategy, treatment recommendations, and written reports are collaboratively reviewed and developed.

 

This model provides each case with the perspective of two licensed clinical social workers while providing consultants with ongoing clinical consultation, case collaboration, professional support, and quality assurance throughout the mitigation process.

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

Mitigation Specialists may be responsible for:

• Conducting comprehensive biopsychosocial interviews with clients by secure video conference or in person

• Interviewing incarcerated clients at correctional facilities when necessary

• Identifying and interviewing collateral sources, including family members, significant others, educators, employers, treatment providers, social workers, and other individuals familiar with the client

• Obtaining, reviewing, and analyzing educational, medical, psychiatric, substance use treatment, employment, social service, institutional, and other relevant records

• Assessing developmental history, trauma exposure, mental health, substance use, family dynamics, educational functioning, cognitive or developmental concerns, peer relationships, environmental influences, and other psychosocial factors

• Identifying mitigating circumstances, strengths, protective factors, treatment needs, and rehabilitative potential

• Preparing comprehensive, clinically informed written mitigation reports

• Collaborating with defense attorneys regarding case objectives and relevant psychosocial findings

• Identifying appropriate mental health, substance use, residential, and community-based treatment resources when indicated

• Assisting with treatment referrals, placement coordination, and alternative-to-incarceration planning when appropriate

• Communicating with treatment providers and programs regarding eligibility, admission, participation, and progress

• Providing court advocacy or professional consultation when requested and appropriate

• Maintaining organized case documentation and meeting all attorney and court-imposed deadlines

 

Remote Work & Travel Requirements

 

This position is designed to be primarily remote. Consultants may complete most case responsibilities from home, including:

• Client and collateral interviews by video conference

• Attorney consultations

• Record review and analysis

• Case conferencing

• Treatment research and coordination

• Report writing and documentation

 

However, applicants must be willing and able to conduct in-person interviews when required, particularly when a client is incarcerated and remote access is unavailable or clinically inappropriate.

 

Long Island consultants must be available to travel to correctional facilities in Yaphank and Riverhead, Suffolk County, when necessary. Depending on caseload, this may generally involve approximately one to three in-person correctional facility visits per month.

 

Cases may involve clients located throughout:

Suffolk County | Nassau County | New York City’s Five Boroughs

 

Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

​

• Current New York State LCSW licensure

• Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills

• Experience working with individuals with complex mental health, substance use, trauma, developmental, cognitive, medical, or psychosocial needs

• Exceptional analytical and professional writing skills

• Ability to synthesize extensive clinical and historical information into a coherent biopsychosocial formulation

• Strong interviewing and interpersonal skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Excellent organization, time management, and attention to detail

• Ability to work independently while functioning effectively within a collaborative team model

• Ability to manage time-sensitive assignments and consistently meet established deadlines

• Competency with technology, electronic records, secure video conferencing, and remote professional communication

• Willingness and ability to conduct correctional facility interviews when required

 

Experience in forensic social work, criminal defense, correctional settings, trauma treatment, mental health, substance use treatment, or complex psychosocial assessment is strongly preferred.

 

Fluency in a language in addition to English is highly valued and may qualify consultants for enhanced compensation on cases requiring bilingual services.

 

Compensation & Schedule

 

Mitigation Specialists work as independent contractors and maintain significant flexibility in determining their schedules and caseloads.

 

Consultants may accept assignments based upon their availability, provided that all agreed-upon investigative and court deadlines are met.

 

Compensation is commensurate with experience, qualifications, case complexity, and scope of work.

 

The flexible case-assignment model allows clinicians to determine how many cases they accept based on their professional and personal schedules.
